Bringing Masks to Life: The Fourth Phase of Our Papier-Mâché Project

The fourth phase of our papier-mâché mask project was all about transforming creative ideas into vibrant, three-dimensional art. EY2 students began by crafting the base of their masks. Armed with strips of used paper and glue, they carefully layered the strips over balloons, creating a sturdy foundation for their designs. Once the masks were fully covered, they were left to dry under the sun, building excitement for the next step.

On the next day, the fun really began! With the base dry, students grabbed their poster paints and dove into adding colour. Whether their designs were fierce, funny, or fantastical, each mask started to come alive. Eyes, noses, and hair were added to give the masks character and personality. Each student made different character. This was their chance to express their individuality and unleash their creativity.

The day was ended by having the “Highlight and Revise” session where students reflected on their work and examined the details. Many realized how important it was to build their mask layers evenly and ensure their paint colours matched their original vision. Some students also discovered the value of patience—waiting for the mask to dry completely was crucial for adding finer details. Overall, the activity helped students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills as they made adjustments and refined their designs.

This phase also encouraged students to see the value in reusing materials. By repurposing old paper and plastic, they learned how everyday items could be transformed into something new and exciting, reducing waste while fostering creativity. In the end, everyone gained a deeper appreciation for the artistic process, from creation to revision, and the joy of making something entirely their own. ***
