Early Year 2 – English: Giggles, Feathers, and Feelings

Early Year 2 – English: Giggles, Feathers, and Feelings

Today, the EY2 children participated in a calming and joyful activity called the Tickle My Toes Game. The teacher explained that this game helps children feel calm, happy, and relaxed. With shoes and socks off, the children lay down with eyes closed, focusing on their breathing and noticing how their bodies felt. Using a soft feather, the teacher gently tickled one child’s toes while the others guessed whose turn it was. The feather was then passed around, allowing each child to take part in the game.

This simple yet thoughtful activity encouraged children to slow down, concentrate, and pay attention to their senses. It also introduced a practical tool they can try at home with family or friends whenever they feel upset or worried. Through shared moments of stillness and laughter, the children discovered how small, mindful actions can help calm their bodies and lighten their minds.

The session continued with storytelling and language practice. Each child selected a picture showing a different situation and described it using English sentences, such as: “I feel happy when I celebrate my birthday,” “I feel sad when I fall down,” or “I feel excited when I win a game.” This activity supported the children in practising spoken English, linking emotions to real-life experiences, and gaining confidence in expressing themselves clearly.

Teachers reflected that the session required careful listening, taking turns, and the courage to speak in front of others. Beyond learning about emotions, the children also showed independence, respect, and growing confidence in using English in meaningful and personal ways. ***
