Early Year 2 – English: Designing My Tree House
In this English lesson, EY2 children explored the idea of tree houses through stories, pictures, and discussion. They learned that some people and tribes around the world still live close to nature, including in homes built high among the trees. As different tree house designs were shown, the classroom quickly filled with excitement and imagination. The children eagerly shared their thoughts about whether they would like to live in a tree house and what it might feel like.
The discussion soon became personal and creative. Each child designed their own dream tree house, thinking carefully about what they would include inside. Some imagined cosy reading corners, rope ladders, toy rooms, or even small gardens. Through this process, the children practised expressing ideas, making decisions, and turning imagination into visual plans.
To complete the activity, the children copied and read a simple paragraph about their tree house. This helped strengthen early reading and writing skills in a meaningful context. Activities like this encourage creativity, confidence, and communication, while reminding children that language grows best when connected to imagination and personal experience.
