Early Year 2 – Arts: Making Origami Plant Pots
As part of the theme Playful Learning with Nature, EY2 students explored how plants grow by expressing their understanding through art. The activity began with observing a finished origami plant and real plant. Students were encouraged to look closely and share what they noticed, describing colours, shapes, and plant features. This observation stage helped them connect art with real-life experiences in nature.
With step-by-step guidance, students folded coloured paper to create a simple origami plant pot. They then drew plant shapes such as leaves, grass, or flowers, coloured them, cut them out, and decided where to place each part before gluing them onto their pots. Through this process, students practised fine motor skills, creativity, and decision-making while building their own unique plant artwork.
The activity also encouraged independence and problem-solving as students made small adjustments and personal choices in their designs. By translating what they observed in real plants into visual forms, they deepened their understanding of plant parts and how living things grow.
Learning about plants through art allows children to explore nature in a meaningful and lasting way. It strengthens observation skills, nurtures creativity, and helps children develop a sense of care and appreciation for the natural world around them.
