Early Year 2 – Arts: Making Klompen
This week, EY2 students participated in the ‘Around The World’ activity and were specifically invited to learn about the Netherlands. After listening to information about the Netherlands in general, students were invited to learn about special things from the country, such as Klompen, Windmills, Tulip Flowers, etc. Yesterday, students were invited to observe how Klompen, a typical Dutch footwear, was made. They listened and asked many questions about the unique footwear made of wood. Some children even expressed their curiosity and desire to wear it.
As a form of hands-on activity to connect students more to the theme, students were asked to decorate the outline of the klompen by cutting, drawing, and coloring. They were given 3 choices of sample images to use, namely Dutch houses, windmills, and tulips. Students were enthusiastic about the activity by making choices and completing all the steps orderly. Giving students the skills to follow simple procedures and make decisions independently is very important for student development. Both of these help students to recognize themselves well and also increase their self-confidence. ***
