Early Year 1 – Science: Capillary Action
EY1 students enthusiastically explored capillary action through a fun blooming paper flower science experiment. Prior to the session, students discussed the function of water and shared everyday experiences of spilling water and how they clean it up, helping them connect science to real life.
Next, students investigated what happens to water when it is wiped using different materials. Through hands-on exploration with tissue, sponge, plastic, and paper, they discovered that some materials absorb water because they are porous. They then observed the blooming paper flowers closely, watching how water traveled through the paper and caused the flowers to open, demonstrating capillary action in action.
After the experiment, students shared their observations, reflected on what they noticed, and discussed other classroom items that might absorb water. Through this activity, they developed curiosity, critical thinking, and observation skills while strengthening their ability to connect scientific concepts to their daily experiences.
