Early Year 1 – Maths: Recognising Shapes in Flowers

EY1 students continued learning about plants through a fun Flower Blocks activity. Students began by singing “How Plants Grow” and watching a video about different flowers. They talked about which flowers were tall or short and identified shapes they could see in the flowers, petals, and leaves.

Students then reviewed different 2D shapes and sight words before sorting shape blocks through a hands-on activity. Afterwards, they worked in groups to create flowers using the blocks and presented their creations using simple sentences such as “This is the stem” and “The petals are triangles.” Students also measured their flowers using lego blocks as non-standard units and compared which flower was the tallest and the shortest.

This activity helped students recognise and sort shapes, compare height and length using non-standard units, solve simple patterns, practise teamwork, and develop fine motor skills through hands-on learning.
