Early Year 1 – Maths: Recognise the shapes

EY1 students reviewed identifying shapes through a playful activity. The lesson was connected to their learning about rainwater and how it flows into lakes, ponds, rivers, and the sea. Students also learned about rivers and water transport, including boats, and discussed how boats travel on rivers and why water transport is important.

Afterwards, Students took part in a paper boat activity. They placed their paper boats on water and watched them float. This helped them connect their learning to a real and fun experience. As the boats floated, students were asked to blow gently to help their boats move forward. When the boat stopped, students identified and named different shapes that were displayed.

This activity supported students’ cognitive and motor skills while also improving their shape recognition. By learning through play, students stayed motivated and actively engaged, which made the lesson enjoyable and effective.
