Early Year 1 – Maths: Let’s Dry and Count

In Maths lesson, EY1 students learned about the concept of addition. In order to give better understanding about the concept, they joined a hand-on activity by combining counting activity and practical life skill. Students had to work in pairs and each of them was given a number card. They had to hang some napkins on the clothesline as many as the number they have got. After hanging the napkins, they had to add their napkins and count the result together.

This activity offered a tactile and visual way to engage with maths. It also made the learning process more interactive for the students. By physically hanging napkins to represent numbers, students could visualize the addition process and grasped the concept of combining quantities in a hands-on way. As students learned about the addition concept, they also got the chance to train their fine motor skill at once by pinching the clothespins. It enhanced their hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness as they arranged their pieces along the line. Furthermore, students were able to develop their practical life skill which is very important for their daily life. it is hoped that students will be able to implement the skill that they have got in the future.
