Early Year 1 – Maths: Exploring shapes with leaves
EY1 students learned about shapes through a fun hands-on activity using natural materials, especially leaves. This learning experience helped students understand shapes in a concrete and meaningful way.
The activity began at home, where EY1 students explored their surroundings with their parents to find different kinds of leaves. The students were very excited to share their experiences and discovered that leaves come in many different shapes. The students then sorted the leaves based on their shapes and measured them using paper clips as a non-standard unit. They were actively involved and enjoyed the activity.
Through this activity, students developed an understanding of shapes, sorting, and measurement concepts while enhancing their observation skills and critical thinking. Parent involvement during the home exploration helped connect learning at home and school, making the activity enjoyable and meaningful for students.
