Early Year 1 – Maths: Colour Patterns
EY1 students explored desert snakes and colours through hands-on activity. They began by recalling colours they already knew and observed pictures of desert snakes, identifying colours like brown, yellow, and green. Students were then introduced to two new colours: black and white by looking at snakes that have those colours on their skin. During the discussion, students also learned what to do if they ever see a snake in their neighbourhood. They were reminded to stay calm, keep a safe distance, and call an adult for help instead of trying to touch or scare the snake.
Students also learned that many snakes have patterns on their bodies made from repeating colours or shapes. After observing a model, they decorated their own snake templates by following simple colour patterns such as yellow–green–yellow–green. Some students even challenged themselves to create their own patterns using 2–3 colours.
This activity helped students recognise and sort colours, understand simple patterns, follow safety reminders, express creativity, and develop fine motor skills while colouring and decorating their snakes. ***
