Early Year 1 – Maths Arts: Fun Alien Creations

Today was a day full of imagination and discovery in our classroom. The EY1 students worked together in small groups to design their own alien characters using geometric shapes. They used creative materials such as bottle caps, straws, popsicle sticks, and sequins to bring their aliens to life. Each group worked with enthusiasm and teamwork to build the most unique aliens they could imagine.

In individual activities, the children also practiced assembling alien-themed puzzles. To extend the learning, they measured the height of their alien creations using a non-standard unit, paper clips. This hands-on task helped them understand measurement in a playful and meaningful way.

Activities like these are more than just fun, they support important early childhood development. Children build fine motor skills, learn to recognize shapes, and begin to understand measurement concepts. Group work encourages cooperation, communication, and respect for others’ ideas, while individual tasks foster independence and focus. Most of all, creative activities like this spark imagination and help children feel confident in expressing themselves. What a wonderful way to learn through play! ***
