Early Year 1 – Math: Making Birthday Cake
In the ongoing theme of ‘This is Me,’ EY1 students were also invited to explore birthdays as a sign of their changing ages. They enthusiastically mentioned items they had encountered at birthday celebrations, such as birthday cakes, number candles, tumpeng, balloons, birthday hats, clowns, etc. In mathematics lessons, they were encouraged to play a game of making birthday cakes using blocks. They had to arrange the blocks in numerical order while making them. EY1 students appeared delighted to participate in this activity, with many requesting the opportunity to repeat the game. For young children, play is a central aspect of their lives. Through play, they can learn various concepts such as numbers, shapes, numerical symbols, and even cause-and-effect relationships. For children, play is a fundamental activity, so it is important to ensure they continue to feel engaged in play even while learning essential foundational concepts. ***
