Early Year 1 – Exit Point: Shadow Hunting
EY1 students had an exciting day walking around the school as part of their Exit Point for the Weather Wonders theme. During their exploration, they observed how shadows formed under the sunlight, with some noticing clear and defined shapes while others saw subtler shadows as the sun occasionally peeked through the clouds. This sparked curiosity about how weather conditions influence shadows, leading to discussions about how clouds block sunlight and change the appearance of shadows throughout the day.
This activity nurtured multiple intelligences, including naturalistic intelligence as the children observed and analyzed their surroundings, bodily-kinesthetic intelligence as they used their bodies to interact with the shadows, and interpersonal intelligence as they shared their observations and collaborated with peers. It also enhanced executive functioning skills, such as working memory by connecting prior knowledge about weather and shadows, cognitive flexibility by adapting their thinking to varying conditions, and self-regulation by staying focused and engaged throughout the activity. The children experienced a valuable opportunity to learn about appropriate behavior in public spaces as they practiced walking in an orderly manner, staying aware of their surroundings, and showing respect to others. These are important life skills that build responsibility and social awareness. ***
