Early Year 1 – English & Science: Exploring Nature

EY1 students had an exciting integrated English and Science lessons filled with exploration and discovery! They started by singing The Bear Went Over the Mountain and discussing the bear’s journey, sparking curiosity about the natural world.

Inspired by the song, they embarked on their own adventure in the playground, collecting natural materials such as twigs, soil, leaves, flowers, and pebbles. Using new vocabulary, they identified, classified, and compared their findings, enhancing both their language and scientific observation skills.

Taking their exploration further, the children conducted a simple experiment by mixing their collected materials in bottles filled with water. They observed changes as they shook and let their mixtures settle, discovering how different materials float, sink, or change color in water.

Beyond science and language learning, this hands-on activity also nurtured essential social-emotional skills. The children practiced taking turns, sharing materials, and collaborating, reinforcing the values of patience, teamwork, and curiosity.
