Early Year 1 – English: Nature Exploration
EY1 students continued their learning about nature through hands-on exploration. The session began with a shared story, Rhoda’s Rock Hunt by Molly Beth Griffin, which encouraged students to recall prior knowledge and introduced them to a variety of natural items from their environment.
Students then went on a nature walk at Manahan, following simple instructions as they collected leaves, stones, sticks, and mud. They observed how adding water changed the color, texture, and feel of the materials, using theme language such as “wet,” “mud,” and “water” to describe their discoveries.
Back in the classroom, students explored the collected materials at a loose parts station, sorting and describing what they saw while sharing their observations with peers. They reflected on their experiences and revisited the story by retelling key moments through actions, pictures, or simple words. Through this activity, students deepened their understanding of natural processes, strengthened vocabulary and communication skills, and developed curiosity, observation, and critical thinking, making meaningful connections between the story, the environment, and their own hands-on experiences.
