Early Year 1 – Arts: Polar Habitat
EY1 students explored Arctic animals through a creative art activity inspired by The Little Polar Bear by Hans de Beer. They first looked at pictures of Lars on the ice and shared ideas about where he lives. Students then compared and contrasted their host country with the polar habitat, focusing on the colours, textures, and features of each environment.
Next, students used the crayon and pencils to draw and colour their own interpretations of polar animals in their habitat, combining creativity with their observations. They drew their own Arctic animals step by step, guided by the teacher, and coloured them using crayons. They chose Arctic colours like white, blue, grey, and black, adding details such as snow and icebergs to complete their scenes. Students shared parts of their drawings to each other. Finally, students reflected on which parts of the drawing were easy and which were quite hard. This activity helped students practice following instructions, using colours thoughtfully, expressing creativity, and communicating ideas with friends. ***
