Early Year 1 – Arts: Big Planets, Small Planets
Our EY1 students recently took a creative journey through space. They made a beautiful space scene by cutting out three circles of different sizes. The largest circle became Jupiter, the medium-sized one was Earth, and the smallest represented Mars. Using crayons, the children practiced a gradation technique to add color and depth to each planet. They then arranged their planets on black paper and sprinkled glitter to create a sparkling space atmosphere.
This fun activity not only developed their artistic skills but also introduced important mathematical concepts. By comparing the sizes of the planets, the children practiced measurement and learned terms like “bigger,” “smaller,” and “medium.” They began to understand scale in a hands-on, visual way.
Through cutting, coloring, and pasting, students also strengthened their fine motor skills and creativity. It was a wonderful opportunity to combine art, science, and math while sparking curiosity about our amazing solar system. ***
