Toddler – Science: Float and Sink

Toddler students recently participated in a fun science exploration activity to discover the concept of float and sink. The activity began with a short story about baking gingerbread. During the story, the teacher explained that some gingerbread accidentally fell into a bowl of water. This situation encouraged the students to start wondering what might happen to objects when they are placed in water. At the beginning of the lesson, the teacher introduced the key vocabulary float and sink using clear gestures to help them understand the meaning. The students were also invited to connect the idea with their everyday experience, such as when they play with toys in water during bath time.

The teacher then prepared a clear jar filled with water and introduced several objects from the kitchen roleplay area, including a gingerbread cookie, spoon, small sponge, ice cream stick, button, wooden block and pebble. Before each object was placed into the water, the students were encouraged to make a simple prediction about what might happen. They observed carefully to see whether the object stayed on the surface or moved down to the bottom. After placing each object in the water, they observed the result together. They identified which objects floated and which ones sank, while the teacher guided them to describe what they saw. Through this hands-on activity, the students began to understand that different objects can behave differently in water.

This learning experience supported the toddler students in developing early science skills such as observing, predicting and using new vocabulary. The activity also encouraged curiosity and active participation as the children explored and discovered how objects react when placed in water.
