Toddler – Maths: Build Me A Shell
After being introduced to the story of The Tortoise and the Hare, Toddler students imitated the tortoise’s movements by crawling along a line while counting from 0 to 5. The teacher used a tortoise doll to explain its characteristics, including physical features, diet, and the function of its shell as a home. These activities helped the children develop basic recall and understanding of numbers and animals.
Students then reviewed numbers 0 to 4 by observing number cards and practiced matching and classifying numbers onto a tortoise shell in small groups. They independently pasted number symbols onto worksheets to confirm their learning, reinforcing their ability to recognize, name, and associate numbers while practicing fine motor skills.
In small groups, children engaged in collaborative problem-solving by taking turns, helping one another, and ensuring accurate number matches on the shell. This encouraged reasoning, teamwork, and strategic thinking as they worked together to complete the task.
Engaging in activities based on “The Tortoise and the Hare” helps toddlers develop important skills for their daily lives. If these collaborative experiences continue, children will enhance their problem-solving abilities and learn to work well with others. This teamwork fosters confidence and social interaction, preparing them for future learning challenges. Overall, these activities support their growth and development in a fun and meaningful way. ***
