Toddler – Math: The Shape Race

Toddler students engaged in an imaginative activity inspired by the story of “The Tortoise and the Hare.” They were asked to play pretend by walking like a tortoise on a racecourse, bringing the story to life while integrating shape recognition into the activity. To make it interactive, the teacher placed red circles, blue squares, and yellow star bean bags on the children’s backs as they “raced” in turn along the course.

After completing the race, students further extended their learning by participating in matching and sorting activities using pictures of shapes. They enthusiastically sorted and matched the pictures to the corresponding shapes of the bean bags used during the race. This hands-on activity not only engaged their imagination but also strengthened their ability to identify and categorize shapes in a fun and meaningful way.

Through this activity, students were introduced to basic shapes in a multi-sensory and interactive manner. It encouraged recognition and classification skills while also developing their gross motor skills as they moved along the racecourse. By connecting movement, play, and cognitive tasks, the activity successfully reinforced early shape learning in an engaging and memorable way. ***
