Secondary Level: Secondary Students Fuel Up with Plant-Based Protein on Wellnessday

Students in the Secondary school enthusiastically participated in this week’s Wellnessday, which focused its efforts on promoting the benefits of plant-based protein. As part of the program, all secondary students were required to bring a meal featuring plant-derived protein sources, moving beyond typical greens to showcase options like tofu, tempeh, nuts, and seeds. The halls were filled with diverse and innovative dishes, demonstrating students’ creativity and willingness to explore alternative healthy food choices.

The primary goal of this particular Wellnessday was to build students’ awareness about the wide array of complete protein sources available outside of animal products. The program aimed to educate students that a balanced diet can easily be achieved and is often enhanced by incorporating plant-based options, which are rich in fibre and beneficial micronutrients. By making the preparation of these meals a mandatory part of the day, the school provided a tangible, hands-on learning experience about nutritional diversity.

Beyond the educational aspect, this initiative was designed to help students establish healthier, more sustainable eating patterns. Introducing them to plant-based proteins encourages them to make more conscious and varied food choices, promoting not only their personal health but also an understanding of sustainable food systems. The hope is that this exposure will inspire students to integrate these foods regularly into their diets, cultivating lifelong habits that extend far beyond a single school day. Wellnessday serves as a powerful reminder that nutritious eating doesn’t have to be complicated and can be an engaging, flavourful and community-driven experience. ***
