Secondary 3 – Visual Arts: Making Campaign Poster
Students in Secondary 3 engaged in a project focused on creating campaign posters centered around the theme of “Art and Social Commentary”. Initially, the teacher introduced various artworks that could be adapted to reflect social issues, such as a campaign poster addressing bullying or a painting depicting child poverty. Next, students learnt about the role of posters in raising awareness related to social issues among the public. The students selected one of the issues presented by the teacher, including topics like climate change, corruption, mental health, child poverty and cyberbullying. Additionally, students learned about the criteria for an effective poster, which includes being informative, visually appealing and well-organised. They began to outline their poster ideas, incorporating information about the causes and effects of the chosen social issues, as well as strategies for prevention, layout design, and titles. They were permitted to search the internet for examples, strictly for reference purposes and not for direct copying. Furthermore, they had the liberty to select various colouring media for finishing touches, such as coloured pencils, markers or acrylic paint. Throughout the poster creation process, students received constructive feedback from both the teacher and their peers regarding their posters, allowing them to reflect on what needed to be added or revised. The entire learning activity aimed to engage students in the design of their posters, helping them identify the most crucial information to include and encouraging others to read and engage with their campaign messages. Moreover, the poster-making experience enhanced the students’ creativity in design and colouring while also teaching them how to address social issues present in society. ***
