Secondary 3 – Physics: Use of electrical energy in industry.
Secondary 3 students went to SMK Mikael for an outing on 26th October 2023. In this outing class, they learned about the use of electrical energy in the industrial world. SMK Mikael was chosen because apart from being a vocational school, it is also an industry or company that works on technology design projects for the global market, such as drone, train, and airplane technology, with hundreds of projects from over 150 partners in more than 30 countries.
Initially, students prepared several questions about the use of electrical energy in industry. They worked in groups to create a list of questions with the teacher’s guidance. That list of questions was then asked during the outing. During the outing, the students were divided into 5 groups for a touring activity. They observed several areas at SMK Mikael, including the CNC Machine Lab, manual work workshop, digital work workshop, milling machines, 3D printing lab, and factory. Students collected information from various sources, such as vocational school students, teachers, and practitioners.
This outing is not just an activity but an ongoing process. After the outing, students will be given the task of pouring out the data and information they obtained during the outing into the form of a structured scientific report. ***
This outing activity directs students to be independent, more communicative, and to think critically in the learning process. Overall the outing was fun, and the students looked forward to having their next Physics outing. ***
