Secondary 3 – Maths: Simultaneus Equations
Secondary 3 students studied simultaneous equations by applying the concepts of substitution and elimination to solve for two variables. In addition to understanding these concepts, students were also exposed to real-world applications of simultaneous equations. One practical use is in small businesses, such as determining the break-even point and calculating profit.
To reinforce their understanding, teacher introduced word problems based on business scenarios. After ensuring that students could formulate and solve equations, they were given a project requiring them to meet selected sellers from Shelter Manahan. The project began with showing UMKM advertisements including a price list created by Secondary 2 students featuring those sellers. Students were then challenged to determine how many portions of food must be sold to break even, based on the selling price and cost.
After selecting a small eatery to visit, as part of their data collection, students gathered information on operational costs, such as rent, water and electricity bills, labour costs and ingredient expenses. Using this data, they formulated equations and solved the simultaneous equations to analyse business feasibility, determining the minimum number of portions that must be sold and deriving the formula for profit.
This activity strengthens students’ understanding of algebraic reasoning by helping them see simultaneous equations as more than just abstract numbers. They learn to connect Mathematical models with real-life decision-making, improving their problem-solving skills and logical thinking. Additionally, by working with real business data, students gain hands-on experience in financial literacy, enhancing their ability to analyse costs, revenue and profit. Beyond academics, this project also fosters critical thinking, communication and collaboration as students engage with business owners. It further develops their entrepreneurial mindset, encouraging them to apply mathematical concepts in everyday life.
