Secondary 3 – English: Detective Stories
Secondary 3 students ‘Detective Stories’ in English lesson. In the topic, the students learned the techniques of writing a good detective story. The students started learning a detective story from a dystopian story entitled ‘The Pedestrian’. They discussed the mystery of 2053 shared in the story. The students tried to relate the details of the character with the setting of time and place. This activity could boost the students’ critical thinking as they tried to analyze a case and predict what exactly happened from the details of the story.
In the next activity, the students learned a key feature of a detective story: the character of the detective who was responsible for solving the crimes. Therefore, the characters of the detective must be interesting. In the lesson, the students practiced creating an interesting character for a detective story. They were asked to create a character and give detailed descriptions of it. They had to think about the look of the character, the way the character talks/moves, and the personality. Besides, they had to consider the skills a detective must have to solve problems such as analytical, shrewd, or observant. After that, they were asked to generate the descriptions into an image using Artificial Intelligence. Next, they were asked to display their work in the class where the rest of the students could see their characters and learn from them. The results showed that the students were creative in creating the characters. ***
