Secondary 3 – English: Advertising

S3 students learned about advertising. As the final project, they had to make an advertisement. They started the lesson by gaining knowledge about a good ad. They knew the rhetorical techniques used in advertising, such as tricolons, anaphora, and sound patterns. They also learned the use of euphemisms in advertisements.

At the beginning of the lesson, students were shown the best marketing campaigns that went viral and successfully persuaded people either to change their behavior or buy the products. The students were asked to analyze what made the marketing campaigns successful. The students learned that in creating an advertisement, many considerations needed to be taken into account, such as the target audience. Understanding the audience/market is the key to making a successful advertisement. Therefore, in creating the ad, the students were asked to do research/survey on their target audience. As a practice, students were asked to work in groups to create an advertisement in a video form. They were given two options for the goals: to promote a product (of their parents’ business) or to promote behavior change (of the teenagers). They had to work individually to create a radio advertisement for the assessment. The students practiced their communication, cooperation, and critical thinking skills from the series of activities. They also used their creativity in designing their advertisements. ***
