Secondary 3 and Secondary 1 – Maths: Algebraic by Peers

Teachers are not the only source of learning for students. Anyone can become a source of learning, including older students who already have a better understanding of certain topics. Younger students can learn from the learning experiences of their seniors.

In this Mathematics lesson, Secondary 3 students were invited to become learning partners for Secondary 1 students on the topic of Algebraic.

This activity is not only about collaboration but also about how the mathematical concepts that Secondary 3 students learned since Secondary 1 become more meaningful when they have to explain them again to their juniors. Thus, this activity not only aims to introduce algebraic concepts to Secondary 1 students but also serves as a recalling and deepening process for Secondary 3 students.

Secondary 3 students showed great enthusiasm in sharing the concepts they had learned. They began by discussing how to explain algebraic ideas in ways that are simple and enjoyable for younger learners. Using the textbooks they once used in Secondary 1, the Secondary 3 students prepared a variety of learning materials, such as question cards, algebraic expression visuals and simple games. This demonstrates their ability to reflect and show creativity in re-teaching the materials they have mastered.

On the implementation day, every two Secondary 3 students were paired with two Secondary 1 students to share experiences, concepts and tips and tricks for understanding and solving algebra problems. The Secondary 3 students patiently guided their juniors through simple exercises from the student Textbook and Workbook.

Seeing this activity, teacher felt proud to witness how learning could become a mutually strengthening experience. Secondary 1 students gained motivation and an enjoyable first exposure to algebra, while for Secondary 3 students, this became an opportunity to deepen their understanding and practice communicating Mathematical concepts effectively.

In the following meeting, teacher will reinforce the algebraic concepts that have been introduced by the senior students so that Secondary 1 students’ understanding becomes more solid and well-directed. ***
