Secondary 2 – Visual Arts: Monoprinting

Secondary 2 students learned about Monoprinting—an art form that combines drawing with printing techniques to create unique and expressive works. In this project, students experimented with various printing methods such as hand printing, sponge printing, and nature printing using materials like leaves or branches.

The learning process began with a brainstorming session, where students gathered information about Monoprinting through teacher-provided materials and their own explorations. This was followed by group discussions and a worksheet activity, where they identified the techniques used in the three types of printing methods introduced earlier.

Next, each student selected one of the printing methods to use in their own artwork. They created a sketch of an object that reflected their personal symbols and identity, forming the basis of their creative plan. This draft, made on a separate piece of paper, included both the sketch and supporting information about the concept behind their creation.

For the colouring process, students used acrylic paint as the main medium, combining it with their chosen printing tools. They drew and coloured their object on A3 paper, then used the printing technique to decorate the surrounding areas. Favourite colours were chosen intentionally to reflect the theme and personal meaning behind each piece.

To complete the learning experience, students wrote a reflection note about their feelings during the creation of the Monoprinting artwork and how it related to their personalities. The variety of activities throughout the process encouraged students to express their artistic perspective and identity through their work. Choosing the right printing method was a key part of the process, as they had to create harmony and balance in their use of colours and composition. ***
