Secondary 2: Students Complete 3D2N “Live In” Experience in Boro Village
Twenty-three Secondary 2 students successfully completed a three-day, two-night “Live In” program in Boro Village, immersing themselves in the daily lives of local residents. Throughout the program, students stayed in the homes of host families and fully participated in their routines, gaining firsthand experience of rural life and community values.
During their stay, students joined their host families in various activities, including gardening, working in the rice fields, helping at the local market and assisting with household chores. These activities provided the students with a deeper understanding of the hard work, cooperation and resilience that shape the everyday life of the community. They learned the intrinsic value of manual labour and communal effort, recognising how these elements contribute to a sustainable and interrelated society.
On the second day, the students took part in a special workshop with a group of villagers, where they learned to make the traditional snack klepon. Guided by local residents, the students worked together to prepare the chewy green rice-cake balls filled with palm sugar an experience that combined cultural learning with hands-on culinary practice. The students gained practical skills in preparing a traditional dish while absorbing the significance of food as a carrier of cultural identity and history. This collaborative effort demonstrated the joy of creating something meaningful together, exceeding language barriers through shared activity.
The third day brought an outdoor adventure as students explored the natural surroundings of the village. Accompanied by teachers and local guides, they trekked through rice fields, crossed rivers, and walked around nearby settlements, observing the beauty and simplicity of the rural landscape. Through navigating the terrain, they developed resilience and a heightened awareness of the natural balance and environmental factors shaping rural life.
Before departing, students bid farewell to their host families. Many expressed heartfelt gratitude and shared meaningful reflections about their stay. They described forming close bonds with the villagers, feeling as though they had gained new families, and learning valuable life lessons through direct interaction with the community.
The “Live In” program in Boro Village became a memorable experience one that broadened the students’ perspectives, strengthened their empathy, and deepened their appreciation for different ways of life.
