Secondary 2 – Maths: Planning a School Renovation
Secondary 2 students applied their learning on mixed numbers and decimals through a collaborative school renovation project. Working in groups, they identified an area of the school they believed could better support students’ learning and planned a renovation based on their ideas.
Each group calculated the area of the selected space, estimated the materials required using mixed numbers, and calculated the renovation budget in dollars using decimal numbers. They then transformed their calculations into a visual renovation proposal, combining mathematical accuracy with creative design.
To conclude the project, groups presented their proposals to the class, explaining how their calculations supported their renovation plans. Through this authentic task, students strengthened their understanding of mixed numbers and decimals while developing their collaboration, communication, problem-solving, and mathematical reasoning skills.
