Secondary 2 – Learning Project: Sangiran OLP

Secondary 2 students had outdoor learning as part of the learning project activities. They travelled to Sangiran Museum by public transport. They took Batik Solo Trans and Trans Jateng to reach the museum. From the trip, they experienced using public transport – finding the nearby shelter, finding the right bus, getting on the bus and paying. They also understood that different types of public transport have different payment systems.

The project aims to provide the best learning experience for the students. The students can get real experience through the excursion programme where they can get a lot of experience, practice their life skills and get meaningful experience. Sangiran Museum has been chosen as the place to explore. Sangiran Museum is relevant to the learning project because of its background. Situated close to Solo, the museum is recognised as one of the most important sites in the world for the study of fossil man and has been recognised by the UNESCO World Heritage Centre. The museum and its facts, as one of the tourist destinations near Solo, is also a potential field of research. Not only these points, but also the journey to Sangiran is another point that students can explore. As a project, the students are asked to prepare their content video; the content is the findings they get from the journey and the museum. They have to present the findings in a content video (review). The content of the video is a review of the travel package, from the journey (the review of the bus, the service, the atmosphere, etc.) to the tourist destination (what to find, the facilities, the service, including the supporting facilities such as the food stalls and the food provided). Pupils are asked to give an evaluation based on their experience.

The learning project itself is a collaboration between English, Bahasa Indonesia and IT (Information and Technology). Covering the learning materials in the three lessons (writing descriptions, laporan hasil observasi, Photoshop and Ms Word), this learning project chooses ‘Content Creator Project’ as the underlying theme. The theme was chosen because content video has become popular nowadays and it has been proven to be effective in sharing information or promoting something.

This project gives students the opportunity to practice their research skills (searching, locating, extracting, organising, evaluating and using relevant information) in the process of data collection, data analysis and data presentation. In the process, students carry out a series of activities based on the LAUNCH cycle. The whole process is designed to develop students’ creativity, collaboration and critical thinking skills. ***
