Secondary 2 – English: Newscasting
Secondary 2 students learned newscasting through a series of activities. After writing a news item, they were asked to present it in front of the camera. First, they learned from an insightful video how professional newscasters present the news. The students learned the importance of appropriate gestures, voice projection, facial expressions, and fluency—all essential skills for delivering the news effectively. Additionally, they were introduced to the role of the teleprompter, which helps newscasters maintain smooth delivery while reading their scripts. After learning the key techniques, they were given time to read their news and make adjustments to a newscasting version such as adding an engaging opening and closing. Then, they practiced presenting the news using a teleprompter, simulating the real-world conditions of a professional news broadcast. Lastly, they recorded their newscasting in a video. They also edited their videos. From the lesson, the students understood the process of news production, from news gathering and research to news presentation. The activities are expected to enhance the students’ writing and public speaking skills. Furthermore, they were better equipped to communicate with confidence and clarity in both written and spoken formats.
