Secondary 2 – English: Being a Journalist

Secondary 2 students have learned to be professional journalists. After having an intensive study of news features and the language of news, the students were asked to produce their own news reports, being the journalists for the school programs/school events.

The students were required to master the entire journalistic process: gathering the information, finding photos, making captions, conducting interviews and writing the news. They made their own plan to finish their news report: what they needed and the timeline. They arranged their own plan to gather the information, get the photos and conduct an interview with the relevant sources. After getting the complete information, quotes and photos, the students worked on writing the news report. In writing the news report, they had to pay attention to the language and layout. In the process, they had to apply the knowledge about the language of news headlines and the news report. Next, they selected the photos to support the news and added captions.

Writing a news report has improved the students’ writing skills and digital media skills. It requires accuracy and clarity. This comprehensive project concluded in a collection of well-researched and engaging news reports, providing students with valuable, real-world experience in media production. Eventually, mastering the journalistic process equipped these young reporters with essential skills in communication, critical thinking and responsible information sharing, preparing them for the future.
