Secondary 2 – Chemistry: Reactivity of Metal
During the Chemistry class, Secondary 2 students studied electrolysis as a Reactivity of Metal topic. The lesson began with a clear and well-structured explanation of electrolysis, including how electrical energy can cause chemical changes in a substance. The significance of electrolysis in both scientific research and everyday applications was also highlighted to increase students’ awareness of its relevance. Students were introduced to essential terminology such as electrolyte, anode, cathode, and electric current to support their conceptual understanding. Instructional videos, diagrams, and carefully selected examples were used to illustrate how electrolysis works in practice. These learning aids helped students visualize abstract concepts more effectively and made the lesson more engaging.
Throughout the explanation session, students listened attentively and actively recorded important information in their notebooks. They were encouraged to focus on key points and identify the roles of each component involved in the electrolysis process. The use of multimedia resources helped maintain students’ interest and improved their comprehension of the topic. Students showed a positive learning attitude by following the lesson instructions and responding to questions when prompted. This stage of the lesson successfully built a strong foundational understanding of electrolysis. As a result, students were better prepared to analyze the experimental observations that followed.
Following the theoretical explanation, students observed a simple electrolysis experiment presented through an instructional video. The video clearly demonstrated the experimental setup and the electrolysis process, allowing students to observe the formation of gas bubbles at both the anode and cathode. Students paid close attention to the reactions occurring at each electrode and noted the differences they observed. They then analyzed these changes by completing structured worksheets designed to guide their thinking and reinforce key concepts. This activity encouraged students to connect theoretical knowledge with real-world scientific processes and improved their analytical skills. Overall, students demonstrated a high level of curiosity, engagement, and enthusiasm throughout the learning activity, indicating a positive, effective, and meaningful learning experience.
