Secondary 2 – Chemistry: DIY Soap Making: Create Your Own Clean!

Secondary 2 students recently explored the saponification process by making handmade soap from used cooking oil. This project began with a lesson on how fats or oils react with a strong alkali to create soap, helping students understand the science behind the transformation.

Students then applied this knowledge in a hands-on experiment, mixing ingredients and observing the chemical changes as oil turned into soap. This activity highlighted how recycling waste materials can promote sustainability, encouraging students to think about their role in environmental responsibility.

To personalize the experience, students crafted unique bars of soap, experimenting with shapes, colors, and scents. Through this project, they gained practical chemistry skills, ecological awareness, and a deeper appreciation for turning waste into useful products. ***
