Secondary 2 – Biology: Circulatory Diseases

Groups of Secondary 2 students recalled key facts about the circulatory system and its vital role in transporting blood, oxygen, and nutrients throughout the body. Each group focused on a specific circulatory disease—such as coronary heart disease, hemophilia, anemia, heart attack, and hypertension—by identifying its definition, main causes, and symptoms.

The groups explained how each disease affects the body. For instance, the group presenting on coronary heart disease demonstrated how blocked arteries reduce blood flow to the heart. The group on hemophilia explained how the absence of clotting factors disrupts normal blood clotting. Students also compared the similarities and differences between diseases, with emphasis on identifying common risk factors and preventive actions.

They continued by analysing case studies related to each disease and discussed the real-life implications. Students made connections between lifestyle choices—such as diet, exercise, and smoking—and the risk factors of these conditions. Each group also predicted potential complications if the diseases were left untreated, encouraging their peers to think critically about prevention and long-term health impacts.

To synthesise their learning, students proposed awareness campaigns and practical solutions to reduce circulatory diseases within the school community. Suggestions included organising health seminars, launching school-wide exercise programs, and promoting healthy eating challenges.

Through these activities, students not only demonstrated a clear understanding of biological concepts but also applied their knowledge in meaningful, real-world contexts—highlighting the importance of making informed lifestyle choices for better health outcomes. ***
