Secondary 1 – Visual Arts: Materials Explorations
Secondary 1 students learnt about materials explorations. The theme was exploring some materials surrounding to be made as a creation. This time, the students put focus on colours exploration in Arts and creating a painting under two phenomenal artworks, Abstract and Semi abstract.
At first, students were given material about ‘Colours’. Students together with the teacher, discussed about the colours’ elements, how to blend them, what are the colours produced with some mixing colours, their meaning and etc. They connect those elements with Abstract and Semi Abstract creations. As the introduction, teacher shared the big pictures of those two artworks, where Abstract painting was less using of shapes, colours or forms and not attempt to represent reality.
Somehow, Semi Abstract painting was combination of Realism and Abstract work. Next, the students were finding more information about those artworks through exploring the internet, they could choose one of the artworks and find references to be made into their own paintings. The creating medias that the students used were canvas, acrylic paints, paint brushes and other supporting tools, like sponge, tissues, etc, as the mixed media for the creation. Before the making process, the students need to make the concept or draft of their plan of the paintings. They do sketching in a piece of paper. Whenever the students ready to made the creation, they are free to start to do the painting.
The students completed their paintings with a note of reflection where they should written down the artworks that they choose, given title of the creation and some description of the colours and mixed media used by them. The activities happened in the class support students to be more independent to choosing the best artworks for them, including the colours choices or the mixed medias that were proper for their creation. Even though the artworks were dealing with Abstract and Semi Abstract things, they still need to set the ideas of the plan through sketching and open to some adjustment of the creation. The cycle of the activities, gained the students’ critical thinking of their decision to make the artworks and to be open minded to feedback for the goodness of their creations. Also for the reflection part, aimed to give the students an opportunity to share their thoughts and feelings when they do the overall activities. ***
