Secondary 1 – Reading Program: A Joyful Reading
The Reading Time program officially began this August as part of the literacy initiative in Focus Independent School. Students responded positively and showed strong enthusiasm for the launch of this program. To support its implementation, Secondary 1 students have prepared a comfortable reading corner where they can enjoy books during their free time. A variety of books has also been made available to attract students with different interests.
Reading agents, students selected as literacy representatives in Secondary 1 play an important role in assisting the reading coach. Their responsibilities include organising the reading corner, preparing books for each session and guiding their classmates during the reading activity. In addition, they encourage their peers to develop a consistent reading habit.
During Reading Time, the classroom environment feels calm and focused. Students sit in small groups led by the reading agents. They read books together, share their reading experiences and practise retelling the stories they have read. The reading corner is beginning to be used actively and students are showing good cooperation by keeping the class atmosphere conducive while reading.
The Reading Time activity is expected to gradually build students’ reading habits and strengthen the literacy culture in the classroom. It not only improves students’ reading comprehension and discussion skills, but also provides reading agents with opportunities to develop their leadership and communication skills. ***
