Secondary 1 – Physics: Measurement Measuring Mass and Weight
In an engaging Physics experiment, Secondary 1 students worked in groups to explore the concepts of mass and weight using various objects. The students utilised digital scales and force meters to measure the mass and weight of different items, including water, coins, books and personal belongings.
The experiment began with students measuring the mass of the objects using an electronic balance. Each group carefully recorded the mass of their objects in grams. They observed how objects with different sizes and shapes could have varying masses, highlighting the difference between volume and mass.
Next, the students used a force meter to measure the weight of each object. They learned that weight is the force exerted by gravity on an object and is dependent on its mass. By measuring the force in newtons (N), the students connected the concept of weight to the gravitational pull on each object.
Through this hands-on activity, students did not only practise scientific measurement techniques but also reinforcing their understanding of the difference between mass and weight. The experiment demonstrated that while mass remains constant regardless of location, weight can change depending on the gravitational force acting on an object.
The students concluded the experiment by comparing their results, discussing discrepancies and analysing the data they collected. The experience deepened their comprehension of fundamental physics concepts and enhanced their collaborative skills. ***
