Secondary 1 – OLP: Begin Real World Learning Exploration in Yogyakarta
Secondary 1 students from FIS recently participated in an inspiring Outdoor Learning Program (OLP), exploring the corridor of Malioboro and the historic Vredeburg Fort. The journey began with a shared adventure with the KRL train, setting the tone for a day filled with curiosity, collaboration, and meaningful learning.
Upon arriving in Yogyakarta, the students were equipped with worksheets and exploration cards designed to challenge their observational and critical thinking skills. These tools guided them through a series of tasks rooted in the themes of SDG’s 4: Quality Education and SDG’s 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.
In Malioboro, students immersed themselves in the cultural heartbeat of the city. They engaged in challenge based activities that required them to interact with local vendors, identify elements of sustainable urban living, and reflect on the dynamic blend of tradition and modernity. Each challenge sparked deeper awareness and encouraged students to ask critical questions about how cities can support both heritage and progress.
The exploration continued at Benteng Vredeburg, where history came alive through hands on learning. Guided again by their exploration cards and worksheets, students uncovered the stories behind the fort’s walls, connecting past struggles for independence with present day values of peace and sustainability by visiting four dioramas.
This learning experience shows us the school’s commitment to Encouraging lifelong learners who grow through real-world contexts, develop global awareness, and take their curiosity beyond the classroom. Through OLP, students don’t just learn history and social studies; they live it. ***
