Secondary 1 – Maths: Moving, Thinking, Learning: Geometry in Motion
At the end of Semester 1, Secondary 1 students learned Geometry with a focus on the Parts of a Circle. Teacher designed an interactive learning experience where students did not only listen and observe, but also engaged in hands-on activities that helped them understand and remember each part of the circle.
The lesson began by placing several circle models on the floor and asking students to sit around. They came with excitement and curiosity. “What are we learning today, Miss?”, “I think this one is the diameter, but what is this other one?”. These enthusiastic responses showed that students’ natural curiosity became the perfect starting point for meaningful learning.
Teacher then introduced the parts of the circle using a hula hoop and simple analogies. A chord and segment were compared to the strings and body of a guitar, a sector was likened to a slice of pizza, and a tangent was described as a wheel just touching the ground and others analogies. These real-life analogies helped students connect mathematical concepts with familiar objects, making the lesson easier to grasp.
Students were then invited to play “Guess the Circle Part”. Teacher read several definitions or statements, and students had to move to the hula hoop that represented the correct circle part. Everyone put in their best effort—reading the definitions carefully, matching them to the correct part and naming each part accurately. The activity made the classroom lively, engaging, and full of positive discussions, while strengthening their conceptual understanding.
At the end of the lesson, students completed a post-test on the parts of a circle. All students were able to define and draw the circle parts correctly. Although the session was short, the hands-on approach and interactive experiences made the learning memorable and long-lasting.
