Secondary 1 – Maths: From Calculation to Creation: A Meaningful 3D Design Challenge

After learning about the concepts of volume and total surface area of cubes and cuboids, Secondary 1 students were given a challenge that was different from the usual classroom tasks. They were asked to design and create a three-dimensional object that would be meaningful and useful for someone they love. Interestingly, in addition to creating a product for a loved one, some student was also create something for themselves as a reflection that they, too, are worthy of love and care.

In this project, Maths went beyond calculations and formulas. When logic met empathy and compassion, the resulting products were crafted not only with careful reasoning, but also with sincerity and heart. The project concluded with a gallery walk session, where students presented their work to visitors and received evaluations from ten peers. Teacher also participated in the process, walking around to observe the creations, engaging in discussions, and exploring the thinking behind each design.

This learning experience became a space where academic concepts met character development and empathy.
