Secondary 1 – Maths: Equations: Let’s Balance It Out!
Secondary 1 students began learning a new topic: Equations and Inequalities. The main goal of the lesson was to help students understand that a situation can be represented either in words or as an equation; and that they should be able to move between these two representations and solve the equation.
To introduce the concept of algebraic equations, teacher used the idea of balance. A balance means both sides are equal, which is exactly what an equation represents: two equal quantities. Rather than jumping straight into algebraic symbols, teacher first used real-life scenarios and then guided students to form algebraic equations from those situations.
Starting with relatable scenarios helped students truly grasp how algebraic equations are formed and how inverse operations work. Students showed good comprehension; they were able to translate word problems into algebraic equations, move fluently between the two forms and solve the equations effectively.
While working with algebraic equations can be challenging at first, this method made the process more accessible and engaging. This teaching approach offers several strengths, including: making abstract concepts more relatable, encouraging critical thinking through problem-solving and building foundational understanding before introducing formal notation. ***
