Secondary 1 – English: Writing Exhibition

The topic ‘When I was Young’ was a highlight for Secondary 1 students, where they explored autobiographies and memoirs. The lesson began with a lively discussion, as students enthusiastically shared both their good and bad memories from Primary school. They talked about their best friends, favorite experiences, and the moments that stood out during their Primary years.

After sharing, the students read excerpts from well-known autobiographies and memoirs, analyzing how authors vividly captured their childhood memories. This helped them understand the art of detailed storytelling. Inspired by these examples, students were tasked with writing their own memoirs, reflecting on their childhood in 400-500 words. However, some students exceeded expectations, writing over 1,000 words as they dove deep into their personal stories. They even included childhood photos to make their memoirs more personal and meaningful.

Once the memoirs were complete, students set up their work on their desks for a gallery-style walk. Their classmates had the opportunity to walk around, read each other’s memoirs, and discover unexpected and surprising details about their peers. Each student had the chance to read more than 10 memoirs, learning from their friends’ unique experiences.

This activity was not just about writing—it encouraged students to learn from each other, making the lesson both personal and collaborative. By sharing their memories, they gained a deeper connection with their classmates, proving that learning can extend beyond textbooks. Sharing memories, after all, is always a fun and rewarding experience! ***
