Secondary 1- English Peer Power: S1 meet S3 Students to Master Sentence Types Through Knowledge Exchange
Recently, students from Secondary 1 (S1) and Secondary 3 (S3) had an exciting collaborative learning experience focused on mastering different types of sentences. The lesson was designed to leverage the power of peer teaching to ensure more meaningful and optimal learning. The activity began with each class learning their respective materials (Secondary 1 students focused on simple and compound sentences while Secondary 3 students delved deeper, covering all four types of sentences, including complex and compound-complex sentences).
After internalising the material within their own classes, the students were grouped into mixed teams—each containing both S1 and S3 members. The objective was simple: exchange knowledge. S3 students had the chance to review and reinforce their foundational knowledge by teaching simple and compound sentences, while S1 students were introduced to the more advanced complex and compound-complex structures by their S3 mentors. During the small group sessions, the students weren’t just practicing their grammar knowledge; they were also improving essential social and communication skills. They learned to explain concepts clearly, ask constructive questions, and listen actively.
At the end of the lesson, the teacher asked the representative of Secondary 1 groups and the representative of Secondary 3 groups to present in front of the class. Finally, the teacher consolidated the materials, ensuring everyone left with a correct and comprehensive understanding of sentence types. This peer-teaching has fostered a deeper academic engagement across grade levels.
