Secondary 1 – English: Factual Texts
Secondary 1 students learned about visual texts. One of the examples of visual texts is maps. The students were expected to be able to identify the features of a visual text and describe the goal of writing the text. Next, they were expected to be able to share valid information based on the visual text given. The learning objectives were relevant to Social Study and Project-based Learning lessons where they also learned visual texts. Therefore, we had collaborations among the three subjects.
First, Secondary 1 students went to Manahan Stadium to observe its layout and the activities people do in the stadium. After getting the data, they were asked to create a map of Manahan Stadium which was done during Social Study class. Next, they composed a factual text to share the ‘best advice’ for people who will visit Manahan Stadium.
The content of the advice varied from suggested activities to be done in the stadium, to recommended food stalls and amenities around Manahan Stadium. They were encouraged to add some essential information for the readers. To get more data about the amenities around the stadium, Secondary 2 students were invited to share their thematic map of Manahan area that they had made in Project-based Learning class.
It was the first time most Secondary 1 students created a piece of writing in a Microsoft Word document. They were asked to add pictures and include the credits. The students did it successfully. The activities promote the students’ critical thinking and creativity. ***
