
Secondary 1 – Chemistry Topic Test Meets Experiment: Using Litmus Paper and Red Cabbage to Identify Substances
In a recent topic test session, Secondary 1 students conducted an engaging experiment to identify the nature of various substances labelled A, B, C, and D by testing their acidity or alkalinity. The students employed two types of indicators: traditional litmus paper and a natural indicator derived from red cabbage.
The students first used red and blue litmus papers to test each substance. They observed the colour changes: red litmus paper turns blue in alkaline solutions, while blue litmus paper turns red in acidic solutions. If no colour change occurred, the substance was neutral. This simple yet effective method allowed them to classify the substances based on their reactions with the litmus paper. In addition, the students prepared a natural indicator from red cabbage leaves, which contain anthocyanins that change colour depending on the pH of the solution. The cabbage indicator turns reddish-pink in acidic solutions and greenish-blue in alkaline solutions, providing a vivid visual cue to distinguish acids from alkalis.
This experiment covered topic test material; they have to recalling the basic properties of acids and alkalis, applied their understanding of pH indicators to classify the substances as acidic, alkaline or neutral based on observed colour changes. Also compared the effectiveness and reliability of chemical indicators (litmus paper) versus natural indicators (red cabbage juice), discussing the advantages and limitations of each.
This hands-on activity not only reinforced theoretical knowledge about acids and alkalis but also encouraged critical thinking and scientific inquiry among the students. The use of both synthetic and natural indicators provided a comprehensive understanding of pH testing methods, making the learning experience both educational and memorable. ***
