Secondary 1 – Chemistry: Ice cream bag experiment

After learning about the changes in the state of matter, Secondary 1 students were stimulated to practice what they have known by making some ice cream.

Firstly, they put their favourite-flavoured milk in a tiny ziplock bag and putting it in a larger ziplock bag containing ice and rock salt. Then, they mix them up by shaking for ten minutes or so. By doing this, the temperature of the liquid decreased and began to freeze as the ice and salt mixture were circulating throughout it.

This experiment demonstrates how temperature can affect material’s ability to change states, such as from liquid to solid. It is also a form of experiment that becomes a favourite among students, combining a delicious treat with several scientific concepts. ***
