Secondary 1 – Chemistry: From Observation to Understanding – Investigate Material Properties Around School

Secondary 1 students were tasked with selecting various materials from their environment and observing their properties. Students identified and listed materials and their basic properties in a table.

Following the observation, students participated in a Think-Pair-Share discussion. They explained how these properties relate to the concepts learned in class, demonstrating their grasp of the subject matter.

By discussing their observations with peers, students applied their knowledge to analyse and interpret the significance of the materials they observed. Finally, through group discussions, students synthesized information from their observations to conclude the properties of matter and its relevance in everyday life.

This collaborative learning strategy allowed them to reflect individually on their findings, discuss their observations with a partner and share insights with the larger class group. Moreover, this activity encouraged them to apply their knowledge of the matter in a practical context.
